W jednej z wąskich uliczek słonecznej Florencji, gdzie historia splata się z teraźniejszością na każdym kroku, mieści się studio architektoniczne Genius Loci. W maju, w towarzystwie doskonałej grupy polskich architektów, mieliśmy przyjemność odwiedzić włoskich kolegów po fachu i nawiązać twórczą wymianę.
Studio, pomimo tego, że mieści się w mieście, kiedy przekroczy się jego próg, przenosi się do innego świata. Cisza, zieleń i swobodna atmosfera współpracy biją z każdego kąta tego miejsca. Szczególnie urzeka ich ogródek – niepozorny z zewnątrz, pełen roślin, słońca i przestrzeni do rozmów przy kawie czy aperitivo… Miejsce, w którym łatwo zapomnieć, że jesteśmy w środku zabytkowego miasta.

Duch Miejsca
Wewnątrz młodzi architekci i projektanci z różnych stron świata pochylają się nad makietami, ekranami i szkicami. Nam towarzyszy natomiast sam załóżyciel biura, Andrea Grassi, architekt, którego spojrzenie na projektowanie wykracza daleko poza techniczne ramy.
Andrea opowiedział nam, że nazwę Genius Loci pochodzi z łaciny. Mama Andrei była nauczycielką, a język ten wypełniał od najwcześiejszych lat jego dom rodzinny. W tej nazwie zawarta jest esencja jego podejścia do architektury, bo oznacza dosłownie ducha miejsca.
Bo właśnie ducha miejsca próbują uchwycić w każdym projekcie. To nie jest biuro, które „produkuje” budynki. To zespół, który wsłuchuje się w kontekst – krajobraz, historię, ludzi. Andrea w swojej myśli podkreśla, że architektura nie powinna dominować, lecz wydobywać to, co już w miejscu istnieje – czasem ukryte, czasem zapomniane.
Jest to bardzo ładne przesłanie, które bardziej niż na nowoczesności skupia się na więzi i relacji z miejscem, co przecież przyświeca właśnie tak upragnionej przez nas idei slow życia i podróżowania.

Projekty
Manifattura Tabacchi
Obecnie biuro Genius Loci Architettura pracuje nad niezwykłą transformacją dawnej fabryki tytoniu – Manifattura Tabacchi. To tu, w budynku B1, niegdyś magazynującym tytoń, powstaje nowoczesny dom studencki. Architekci zachowują charakterystyczne elementy konstrukcyjne, takie jak masywna ceglana podstawa czy żelbetowe belki, a jednocześnie tchną w przestrzeń nowe życie, inspirowane światłem – tym samym, które kiedyś przesączało się przez patynowane szkło, chroniące tytoń przed słońcem. To właśnie to zjawisko – nazwane przez zespół blue tobacco – stało się motywem przewodnim projektu wnętrz, wyrażonym w subtelnej palecie kolorów i materiałach.

Gucci ArtLab
Jedną z słynnieszych realizacji biura jest nowoczesne centrum innowacji i rzemiosła domu mody Gucci zlokalizowane w Scandicci pod Florencją. Budynek architekci przekształcili z dawnego magazynu przemysłowego. Fasadę stworzyli z miedzianej siatki wkomponowanej w szkło, a pokrywające ją murale,wykonali poproszeni na tę okazję artyści. Wnętrza łączą elementy przemysłowe z estetyką vintage i tworzą dzięki temu niezwykle inspirujące środowisko pracy. W środku znajdują się m.in. laboratoria badawczo-rozwojowe, warsztaty prototypowania oraz przestrzenie edukacyjne, takie jak École de l’Amour, gdzie przekazywane są tradycyjne techniki rzemieślnicze nowym pokoleniom.

Opium Restaurant
Jako, że sami uwielbiamy połączenie mody, designu i architektury, wśród trwających realizacji biura, od razu wpadł nam w oko projekt Opium, restauracja i hotel, o której projektanci piszą:
Ten projekt to hołd dla elegancji XX wieku, inspirowany postaciami takimi jak Gatsby, Onassis, Hubert de Givenchy, Ralph Lauren i Chanel. Opium ma stać się miejscem, które łączy zmysłowość, radość, eklektyzm i relaks, oferując gościom doświadczenie włoskiego stylu życia w nowoczesnym wydaniu.
Popatrzcie na ten kolaż,na te inspirujące detale, sztuka, historia i piękno samo w sobie.

In one of the narrow sun-drenched streets of Florence, where history intertwines with the present at every turn, lies the architectural studio Genius Loci. In May, we had the pleasure of visiting it alongside an excellent group of Polish architects — for whom, we are certain, the visit became not only a professional inspiration but also a deeply personal experience.
The studio is located in the city, and yet, stepping into Genius Loci feels like entering another world. Silence, greenery, and a relaxed atmosphere of collaboration radiate from every corner of this place. Their garden is especially enchanting — unassuming from the outside, but full of plants, sunlight, and space for conversations over coffee or aperitivo. It’s a place where it’s easy to forget you’re in the middle of a historic city.
The Spirit of the Place
Inside, young architects and designers from around the world huddle over models, screens, and sketches. Accompanying us, however, is none other than the founder of the studio, Andrea Grassi — an architect whose approach to design extends far beyond technical boundaries.
Andrea told us that the name Genius Loci comes from Latin. His mother was a teacher, and the language filled his childhood home from an early age. The name itself holds the essence of his approach to architecture, as it literally means “the spirit of the place.”
And it is precisely this spirit that they strive to capture in every project. This is not a firm that simply „produces” buildings. It’s a team that listens closely to context — the landscape, the history, the people. Andrea emphasizes that architecture should not dominate, but rather reveal what already exists in a place—sometimes hidden, sometimes forgotten.
We find it as a really beautiful message, one that focuses less on modernity and more on connection and relationship with a place
Projects
Manifattura Tabacchi
Currently, Genius Loci Architettura is working on the extraordinary transformation of a former tobacco factory Manifattura Tabacchi. In Building B1, which once stored tobacco, a modern student residence is taking shape. The architects are preserving characteristic structural elements such as the massive brick base and reinforced concrete beams, while breathing new life into the space inspired by light — the same light that once filtered through patinated glass to protect the tobacco from the sun. This phenomenon — dubbed blue tobacco by the team — became the guiding theme of the interior design, expressed through a subtle color palette and carefully chosen materials.
Gucci Art Lab
One of the studio’s most renowned projects is the modern innovation and craftsmanship center for the fashion house Gucci, located in Scandicci near Florence. The 37,000 m² building, opened in 2018, was created through the transformation of a former industrial warehouse. The façade is made of copper mesh embedded in glass and adorned with murals by various artists. The interiors combine industrial elements with a vintage aesthetic, creating an inspiring working environment. The complex houses R&D labs, prototyping workshops, and educational spaces such as the École de l’Amour, where traditional artisan techniques are passed on to new generations.
Opium Restaurant
As lovers of the fusion between fashion, design, and architecture ourselves, one current project immediately caught our attention—Opium, a restaurant and hotel described as:
“This project is a tribute to the elegance of the 20th century, inspired by figures such as Gatsby, Onassis, Hubert de Givenchy, Ralph Lauren, and Chanel. Opium is set to become a place that combines sensuality, joy, eclecticism, and relaxation—offering guests a taste of the Italian lifestyle in a contemporary setting.”
